Sclerotherapy Specialist

At ReBalance of Radiance Aesthetics & Wellness of New York City, our specialists offer sclerotherapy procedures as an effective treatment for spider veins. The sclerotherapy procedure can be used for the veins of the body and should not be used on your face. Facial spider veins can be treated with a laser which we also offer in our office.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, red, purple, and blue vessels that are easily visible through the skin. They are typically common on the legs and face.

Varicose veins are raised, swollen blood vessels that usually develop in the legs can be seen through the skin and are larger than spider veins.

Common causes for varicose and spider veins are:

  • Heredity
  • Occupations that involve a lot of standing
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal influences of pregnancy
  • Puberty
  • Menopause
  • Use of birth control pills.

Varicose veins require complex treatment usually performed by a vascular surgeon. Spider veins, on the other hand, are not considered a significant health concern; they are aesthetically unpleasant and can be treated with laser treatment or sclerotherapy.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

Spider veins could be treated depending on the size and location of the veins. The blue spider veins located in the lower extremities could be treated with sclerotherapy. The red spider veins located on the extremities and the face could be treated with a laser.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that has been available since the 1930s. It involves an injection of a specific solution (usually highly concentrated salt or another detergent) directly into the vessel, which causes the vein to fade gradually in 3 to 6 weeks.

This fairly safe sclerotherapy procedure is simple to perform, relatively inexpensive, usually doesn’t require anesthesia, and is performed in our NYC office.

What Is Laser Vein Treatment?

Laser vein treatment is considered a safe and effective treatment option for spider veins on any body part, including the face.

A focused beam of light from the laser equipment is used to target a pigment in the blood, which heats up the small spider vein and destroys it in the process. The laser beam is very focused and precise, used to target a vessel only, and doesn’t affect surrounding tissues.

What Do the Treatments Feel Like?

During sclerotherapy treatment, an injection of a specific solution is administered into the affected spider vein. You might experience mild discomfort when the needle is inserted into the vessel.

Laser treatments are usually painless, or you might feel a warm sensation and a mild sting as snapping of the rubber band.

If you are concerned with the discomfort during sclerotherapy laser vein treatments, please let us know we may administer topical or local anesthesia to alleviate your pain and discomfort.

Is Spider Vein Treatment Safe For Me?

There are certain contraindications for spider vein treatments that you should be aware of, and you need to make sure you notify us if you have them.

The laser vein treatment is contraindicated if you are taking medications that cause photosensitivity, such as certain antibiotics, have a medical condition causing you to be more photosensitive, viral or bacterial infections, or are pregnant.

Before treatment, notify us if you are pregnant or taking medications such as blood thinners, aspirin, Motrin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or herbal and dietary supplements.

Before a procedure, don’t apply any lotions to the area to be treated. Try to schedule your sclerotherapy treatment in ReBalance of Radiance Aesthetics & Wellness before the weekend, and get some rest for several days after, avoiding any aerobic activity. Sclerotherapy solutions can be used for the veins of the body and should not be used on your face. Facial spider veins can be treated with a laser.

What Happens After The Treatment?

After the treatment, the treated veins will gradually be absorbed by your body and disappear over the course of a few weeks.  These veins are permanently destroyed and will not reappear again in the same area.

However, there is always a chance that new spider veins will develop in other areas; therefore, an additional spider veins treatment might be required. We also recommend wearing compression stockings for several days after the spider vein treatment.

Compression stockings help to keep the walls of the treated veins closed, so the body absorbs them faster. If they are not worn as directed, the treated veins will fill back up with blood causing bruising and discoloration.

Dr. Fazylova and the Staff at ReBalance of Radiance Aesthetics & Wellness strive to provide the best aesthetic, holistic and individualized care to help you on your journey to a better health and vibrant appearance.
