Sculptra: Pros and Cons

Sculptra, which has been previously used in Europe as New-Fill, is an injectable aesthetic that has Poly-L-Lactic acid as its main constituent. It is widely used in Europe, the United States of America, and some other countries.

Sculptra is a suspension of poly-L-lactic acid microspheres ranging in size from 40 to 63μm. The suspension contains 4 to 5ml of sterile water with 1% lidocaine. It is biocompatible, biodegradable, and made out of synthetic gel polymer.

How Does it Work?

Sculptra enhances dermal thickness and volume by producing stimulating neocollagenesis (production of new collagen), this is why it is also called a dermal filler. It is currently being applied as an anti-aging substance that will rid individuals of wrinkles and folds on the face. It is more commonly used in the mid-face and temporal fossa than it is used in the mental and pre-jowl areas.

The number of times you need Sculptra injection will depend on how much dermal filler you would require. Sculptra can be injected up to seven times.

So what makes Sculptra better than other collagen treatments?

• Sculptra’s effect is specific to the site of injection: The face filling occurs only at the region or site of injection.
• Sculptra evades collagenases: The human body’s digestive system breaks down collagen immediately after it is ingested. Therefore, treatments using collagen dietary supplements are unreliable. This makes sculpture better than those kinds of treatments.
• Sculptra is the best option for a quick fix that will be Long-lasting: Collagen is a large molecule that cannot easily cross the skin barrier into the body. What are the Side Effects?

• There are late-onset side effects: In spite of the success of Sculptra, there seem to be adverse effects that show up after a long time. This is common with many treatments. There are mild side effects such as redness, pain, tenderness, bruising, itching, and bleeding. Some of the other after-effects of Sculptra may include; granuloma, pseudo abscess, angioedema, and skin induration. Paraffinoma has also been reported, 2 years after the injection of Sculptra.
• Keep Sculptra away from your blood and blood vessels: It is very important that sculpture is not injected into a blood vessel as this can cause blood vessel occlusion, infarction, or embolism.
• You need to consider the strength of the immune system: It is also recommended that individuals with weak immune systems do not use Sculptra. You should also consult your doctor about this.
• Do you have any skin infections? Similarly, individuals with skin infections should not use Sculptra.
• Are you taking any other troublesome medicines? It is not safe to use Sculptra in conjunction with anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin.
